One Voice, One Message, One Grand Success

The Texas Legislature’s current special session has put a reliable revenue source for our public schools and tax relief for property owners within reach. The Texas real estate industry also could benefit from this tax reform. Not long ago, however, the real estate industry was targeted to bear the burden of funding and achieving these important goals. How did this dramatic reversal of fortune come about?

For several years, the Legislature struggled to develop a plan to fund public education and provide property-tax relief. To achieve these goals, a real estate transfer tax and a tax on real estate commissions were frequently mentioned as revenue sources. While REALTORS® have always been willing to pay their fair share, these proposed  taxes targeted only the real estate industry. The Texas Association of REALTORS® instead advocated for a broad-based, low-rate business tax. Today, the Legislature is poised to implement a tax-reform plan that is fair to all businesses and doesn’t single out any industry.

This policy reversal is the direct result of the grassroots activism of the more than 85,000 members of the Texas Association of REALTORS®, which has always defended the Texas real estate industry and the rights of private-property owners. Despite the continually changing political climate, the committed advocacy of TAR’s ever-growing membership has remained steadfast to the benefit of Texas families and businesses.

This success story is a testament of the hard work and potential of Texas REALTORS®. Together, we can shape public policy and accomplish our goals if we demand that our voices be heard. As your field representative, I am committed to promoting the REALTOR® cause, whether through the voting booth or by communicating with lawmakers. By working together we can better ensure the success of your business, the attainment of your goals, and the protection of the American Dream of homeownership.
