CCAR and Texas Sentinels Join Forces to Give a Home to a Wounded Veteran

The Collin County Association of REALTORS® is working with the nonprofit Texas Sentinels Foundation to build a mortgage-free home for a disabled veteran in Collin County. This exciting project, led by 2011 CCAR President Mal Smith, encourages the collaboration of all members as we endeavor to give Collin County native and veteran of Afghanistan, Army Sgt. Justin Feagin, a home for his young family. As both facilitators and stewards of the community, REALTORS® are in one of the best positions to make a positive impact in the lives of the veterans in our community.

Feagin, a native of Collin County, served in the military for five years and was wounded in 2010 while heading up an Afghan Border Police unit. He was hit by an IED that cost him his left foot, a ruptured ear drum, several broken bones and numerous deep shrapnel lacerations, including one to his femoral artery. Feagin's inspiration to join the Army originated when, as a 13-year-old, he witnessed the terrorist attacks of September 11 unfold on television. He has been awarded over 16 medals and accommodations for his service and sacrifice, including the Purple Heart. Medically retiring from the Military within the next year, Feagin intends to enroll in college.

As a Texas Sentinel, Feagin and his family will receive a new, free custom-built home in Collin County. We are fortunate to have the support of entities such as Hillwood Development Company and Highland Homes to aid us in this project. With their help, we have already procured a lot in the Liberty subdivision of Melissa, Texas. But there is still much more to be done to see that this American hero gets a piece of the American Dream for which he sacrificed so much.

The Collin County Texas Sentinels Team has to raise $76,000 in order to break ground on Feagin's home this fall. To help raise the funds, we have a variety of exciting activities planned. Please see the list of activities below for ways you can contribute.

In addition, we are encouraging everyone to make a donation on the Texas Sentinels Foundation website to help us in building Feagin's home (when donating, please select "Collin County" under the Donation Area drop-down menu). All donations, no matter the amount, will bring us closer to the goal of seeing this young hero and his family receive a piece of the American Dream.

Please consider making a donation to the Collin County Texas Sentinels Team today, or find out more about the Texas Sentinels Foundation, their mission and past successes in building homes for disabled veterans in Texas.
